. I squat and my house is clean. (One of these is a lie) . . Squats are one of the most foundational movements and I am a big fan of sqats. Bodyweight squats are one of the rare things for strength training I've doing religiously over the past 27 years. . . So when @indianarunnergirl invited me to join the #squatchallenge, I agreed. After my footsurgery I have to modify and won't go into real deep squats right now. . . So far so good, my wound and my heel bone are cooperating and I dove into it. It's fun and it feels good to be active again since walking still is the most difficult workout right now. . What I was feeling is not primarily heavy fatigue in my muscles ( well, for sure they work!!!) but I was feeling the demand of oxgen my muscles need and therefore my heartrate going up. . 130 squats were absolutely doable but I wanted to feel a tad bit more. . So @corestrength50plus last post came right on time. Elaine suggests the 'Time under Tension' style, to SLOW it down and even hold a position for a few breaths. . Wow, that's terrific! Today I did it that way, not all 135 squats with this method, but I spiced it up every 10th squat or so. Great, I was feeeeeling it. Thank you so much, Elaine! . If you want to start doing squats (with or without challenge), I've shown some modifications on slide two. You can use a chair, hold onto a door, use a magic circle (great tool) or raise your heels standing on books. Safe progression is key, but DO squats. This is a seated back bend and backbending is something I used to avoid. #neversaynever . . 👉SWIPE to see my progression 😱. . . #kingpigeon was just a long term dream 3 years ago because backbendy poses are really challenging for me!! Now I check in every couple months and there’s progress! What’s changed? I’m BOTH stronger and more flexible. How? I used my @infinitystrap to help with the flip grip rotational motion and to work tricep flexibility. Also - increases in hip flexor mobility (lots of lunges), front body, quad and heart opening, upper back mobility and strength and shoulder mobility and strength. It’s a lot. And it took years. I’m currently trying to get leaner and had a tough fast yesterday, and it was due to the following reasons. - 1) I didn't eat enough the day before. 2) I was tired and feeling drained. - The tiredness wasn't entirely due to a lack of sleep, (I could have done with more but it was enough) it was due to inadequate calorie intake. - It can be tempting to push the needle too far into the red and try and increase fat loss. I'm not immune to this idea, because I want my bodyfat gone yesterday, not tomorrow. - The problem is that my body and my fat don't give a flying fuck what I want. - Just like strength cannot be rushed, neither can fat loss. You may progress quickly for a while, but eventually, you run into a brick wall. - A couple of my clients experienced this in a recent push-up challenge that we entered to raise funds for a charity. - Their pushup numbers kept on improving until...one day they didn't. Instead, their numbers got worse? - They were perplexed until I explained it was because they were training at 100% effort each day, and their bodies (in particular the nervous system) said enough is enough. - I advised them to back off and stop their reps at 80% or less, so that they STIMULATE the nervous system, not ANNIHILATE it. - By doing this, their 80% started to increase, thereby making their 100% increase by default. - Extreme dieting has a similar effect on the body. It might work for a while but sooner or later you’ll run into a brick wall. - So today I will make sure I get enough food so that tomorrow's fast is not the miserable affair I experienced yesterday. - Dieting for fat loss isn't much fun at the best of times, but you can make it even more miserable if you try to rush it. - So whatever plan you choose, whether it’s diet or exercise, make sure you stick to it as prescribed. More is not always better, it’s just more. - This fitness journey we’re all on is for life. Remember that next time you’re in a rush to achieve X or Y goal. - Living life at 80% is way more pleasant. Highlights from today’s workout (11-13-19) I have one word - DEADLIFTS!!! 🏋️‍♂️ I was beyond excited to finally try this. I did 3 sets of 6 at 90 lbs plus the bar is about 60. I’m not sure if you count the bar or not. The first set I couldn’t even lift it. @heavyweight_hunter had to assist. On the 2nd set, Hunter helped for the first few and kind of backed off on the last few. When I got to the 3rd set I did it all on my own. I was soooooooo excited. OCR training circuit, rock wall traverse, ring muscleup, followed by a spear toss. I didn’t fall off the rings this time. My lower deltoid hurts so I have to careful with the muscleups but it’s manageable. My portable spear is getting a lot of field use and is getting rather beat up. I have had to repair it a few times. 💞I did it! Today was day one of my intensive therapy program! I was very nervous, but I did it!! It was mostly introductions and explanations of services today. Tomorrow we start cognitive behavioral therapy. That's the tough stuff! 💞I only got in 5.5 miles today because I lose almost 2 hours just driving there and back. There will probably be some minimum run days of a 5k coming soon. But that's ok. What I'm doing is very important! Just making it there was a huge accomplishment! I'm feeling great right now!! This decade of life has been about finding my desires and passion in life. As women we move through so many different stages... everything from youth and dating to raising children and holding space for them as they become adults and move out on their own. One stage is not inferior or superior to another. Rather, it’s about learning and experiencing what we need to in that moment. I started my fitness business, because I saw a gap. Women in my age group were largely ignored or not taken seriously. Everything was marketed toward women decades younger... from training programs and supplements to workout attire. Marketers seemed not to notice or find this demographic relevant. I remember I had to search hours on the internet to find anyone close to my age competing and could only find 2. I’m happy to see this stereotype being challenged and changed. It’s my desire to continue to put out a positive message that says “Hey... we are here. We aren’t done living. In fact we’ve just begun.
