So Ibushi & Naito are both out of the New Japan Cup? I’ve seen lots of discontent online about it - If I may put my uber mark backseat booker Gedo style cap on, here’s an idea. What if Ibushi rematches Naito at Madison Square Garden for the IWGP Intercontinental Title in the main event and Jay White faces the New Japan Cup winner in the semi-final match? That way Naito gets some revenge for when he lost his Tokyo Dome main event due to the IC Title match usurping his spot... They could even do a worked fan vote for which match gets the main event to recreate the situation behind Wrestle Kingdom 8. Sets up some tasty character development for Naito, builds up some bad blood for the eventual Jay White vs Naito match, MSG gets a worthy main event and it opens up the New Japan Cup to have a potential surprise winner (Sanada?)... # I just think Okada (or Tanahashi) winning the cup and facing Jay is too predictable. Considering the potential importance of the MSG show, it really needs some loaded match ups as its beginning to feel like an ROH House Show with NJPW guests. I’m sure it’ll be a solid show but its hard to be excited for it with the current card. Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport has a more exciting and interesting card at the moment. The MSG show might be sold out but that should put pressure to put on the biggest show they can, not phone it in and right now it feels like the later. # Photos from NJPW Road To Tokyo Dome shows on 14/12/18 & 15/12/18.
So this is a bit nuts isn't it?!
Wow. Didn’t see Zack Sabre Jr. beating Ibushi coming. Gotta love those NJPW swerves. Still I kinda question the decision to take Ibushi out from the tournament this early, especially given his popularity in the USA and with the tournament being to determine who gets the main event match at Madison Square Garden, it does suck some of the fun out of an already grueling tournament. Yeah, it protects potential bigger matches for Ibushi so they can be promoted better down the line but at a time when many fans are feeling down on the New Japan product, particularly in America, heating up heels just stirs the discontent. It was a great match and the lack of social media buzz about it is something I can only put down to marks being bummed out about the result. # I’m happy with ZSJ going over. ZSJ with Taka Michinoku as his manager is one of the most unique and fun acts in wrestling right now. Always got time for more Zack Sabre Time! # ... so are we getting Okada vs Jay White 3 at Madison Square Garden? Who else do you think could be winning the New Japan Cup? # Photos are from 03/01/19 NJPW Fan Festival Press Conference.
It’s times like these where when I should be frustrated, or bitter, or at a loss for words, I’m actually relieved and feel a sense of freedom. That I can do things that I never have had the chance to do this year. Where I don’t have to pretend, or think differently or feel differently. I’m glad I landed on my feet again. And I’m so excited to be a year smoke free and feel that sense of accomplishment. And to watch wrestling again. I’ve missed it so so much. #TetsuyaNaito #LosIngobernablesDeJapon #NJPW #njpw1972 #wrestling #puroresu #destino
