My word for 2019 is and has been “nurture.” When I selected it, I mostly had the idea of nurturing my two children and my relationships, but this last weekend, I realized just how important it is to nurture my own self. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Truth be told, I’m terrible at self-care—and no, I’m not talking about pampering; I’m talking about taking actions to take care of my soul. I signed up for a yoga retreat with full knowledge that I would be leaving my four-month-old at home with my husband—that it wouldn’t be just an evening out—no, it would be an entire weekend. Just. For. Me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I went through a full guilt cycle: excitement, questioning, anxiety, and then guilt. I went through it before and then again twelve hours after I left. I had to actively choose myself. My soul. I had to choose to nurture myself even though everything in me as a mother is biologically engineered to selflessly give myself until there’s nothing left. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I spent a weekend among women who somehow knew how to nurture me, too—with their words, actions, and presence. I spent a weekend loving on and nurturing my soul, and I’m a better mom for it. I haven’t yelled once since I got back. I haven’t functioned from a place of lack. My cup is full. I am happy. Truly, genuinely happy, and that is by no mistake.
