90-Day Challenge 🤦🏻♀️ ⠀ Let’s talk about 90-day challenges, and how 90% of them are 🤬 ⠀ The problem isn’t always the programs themselves, though. There are plenty of 90-day challenges that provide value & education, and can get you fantabulous results. ⠀ My beef's with the marketing behind most challenges. ⠀ See, many on ‘em prey on desperate people and say things like: ⠀ “Get six-pack abs in just 90 days!” ⠀ “Shred all your body fat in 12 weeks… just in time for summer!” ⠀ Sounds enticing, right? ⠀ And depending on your current state, those claims might be true. If you’re already lean, or just have 10-15 pounds of fat to lose, 90 days can be a realistic amount of time to see results. ⠀ But(t🍑) if you’re hoping to lose 40+ pounds, or go from “fat to fit” in a mere 12 weeks, you’re only setting yourself up for failure… ⠀ Truth is, transforming your body takes a LONG ass time. ⠀ And even then, your results are meaningless unless you build a lifestyle around maintaining ‘em. ⠀ So when people ask me “how long do you think it’ll take me to achieve my goals?” ⠀ I usually say, “at least one year.” ⠀ And that’s regardless of their starting point. ⠀ Reason being, whether you have 10 or 100 pounds to lose, changing deeply-rooted unhealthy habits and negative self-talk is going to take more than 90 days. ⠀ Here’s the good news ✅: You may not go from 30% + body fat to lean ‘n’ mean in 90 days, but you can make some awesome progress towards it! ⠀ Just be smart about it… ⠀ If you find a 90-day challenge that forces your to eliminate certain foods or do strenuously 2+ hour workouts 7 days per week…. ⠀ You’ll just be setting yourself up for struggle 90 days from now. EMOTIONS vs. SCIENCE • It is very easy to go too hard on yourself and blame yourself for enjoying food. Dieting shouldn't mean having "good" or "bad" foods. All food is food. You should enjoy it all without having to blame yourself for it. Some less nutritious, higher calorie foods should be consumed in moderation while nutrient dense, lower calorie foods should be consumed in abundance. 👍🏻🤔 • Also the emotional breakdown that happens when you feel guilty and disappointed is unnecessary because eating a cookie did not throw you off of your diet but if you feel guilty and give up then the extra 1000 calories you're going to consume are going to ruin your progress.☹😬 • Scientifically, a cookie is max. around 240 calories. Yes, maybe it is not incredibly nutritious but it's tasty as hell and won't affect your progress in the long run if consumed in moderation. THE SIMPLE ANSWER Science has come a long way when it comes to the body. But beneath all that science, though, lies a foundational element that brings all of it together. Without it, science will only take you so far. With it, you’ll propel to some serious gains. What is it? The answer is not very complicated. In fact, it is a simplistic one. But the simplest answer might be the very one most are trying to avoid. Yet, those who have reigned on top of their game preach it. Dorian once said, muscle growth is an adaptation to stress. Arnold once said, nothing beats hard, hard work. Ronnie once said, everybody wants to be a bodybuilder. But don’t nobody wants to lift heavy ass weight. Those looking to put on muscle cannot avoid putting in the hard work. You cannot avoid pushing and breaking your boundaries. And you most definitely cannot avoid lifting heavy ass weight; heavy relative to you. Growth takes time, but goddammit make that time conducive and dig deep and make shit happen. Let’s get it.
I had a research methods professor in college that tried to convince me I was “too smart” to be a psychology major. He thought I was wasting my intelligence by going into the therapy field, when he believed I should go into mathematics (his full time job was at Boeing, he was a professor for “fun”, and clearly didn’t realize how much I suck at math). I started to doubt my path and questioned if I really was wasting my potential. But, once I quieted HIS voice in the back of my head (as flattering as his opinion was), I got really committed to my confidence in knowing I’m meant to be helping people. My interpersonal, intrapersonal, and emotional intelligence are more valuable to me than solving equations and I am now fully sure that my souls purpose is to help empower people to find resilience, optimism, self love, and self awareness like I have... This is why I’m never giving up on myself or my business. There’s many forms of intelligence, skill, and passion.. it’s up to us to decide where OURS is best suited. As much as I believe my professor (who taught the only “difficult” class I had in that major) had great intentions in trying to convince me to go down a different path.. he was wrong andddd I’m totally using my badass Aly brain in the best possible way, with that being said.. 👈 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here to lose weight? Read on... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Calorie Deficit - This is the most important rule. Without doing this you will struggle to lose anything. Aim for 10x your bodyweight in lbs to start. Weigh 150 lbs? Eat 1500 calories. You should be aiming for 1-2 lbs of weight loss per week. Lose less = increase deficit by 1x BW. Losing more = Decrease deficit by 1x BW. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Minimum of 0.82g of protein per lb of BW - You want to lose weight but you want to be sure it's body fat you're losing and not muscle. Nobody wants to be scrawny. This is a minimum. The ideal is 1g per lb of BW. A 200 lb person should aim for 164-200g of protein daily. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Train to build muscle - Building muscle works to increase your daily calorie burn and so your deficit. Plus you'll look awesome. Click the link in my bio for a workout to do just this! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. 10k Daily Steps - Increasing your output will make this journey so much easier. Make excuses to walk places. Going to the shops? Leave the car behind. Too far to walk? Park as far away in the car park as you can and walk in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5. Intermittent Fasting - This is not for everyone but I really encourage you to give it a go. Simply skip breakfast and consume all your calories at lunch and dinner.
