We don't need to be #Dumbo for our dreams to take flight. The #elephantorphanageproject in Zambia makes our dreams come true! __________ Check out the trailer for the award-winning documentary #AHerdOfOrphans on @faunevoyage IGTV channel. The film is a heartwarming story about #babyelephants impacted by the ivory trade and growing up at an #elephantorphanage operated by #gamerangersinternational
Mae Mahn and her daughter, Moan, share a little slice of Lao heaven. We wake up to an alarm, we rush to get to work, we worry about paying bills, we stress about the news and the state of the world. Mahouts have very demanding jobs, but seeing Mr. Laai sitting on this log, listening to the tinkling of the river water over stones and watching as these beautiful elephants wander by could make any of us envious of this separate peace. watch the moment a #wobbegong sneaks up on one of our divers @emily_bourke on a dive at Broughton Island this week! This carpet shark is a near threatened species. They are masters at camouflage, so be conscious of where you put your hands when diving! They have been recorded at depths of up to 218 meters! ELEPHANTS HAVE FACES Elephants have faces, and these days, even dead elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem do. This might sound like a strange statement, but when Big Life was established in 2010, most elephants were dying at the hands of poachers. Since 1/3 of the ivory is embedded in their skulls, the elephant’s faces were mutilated to get at the tusks. When we found them, it was a horrific and gory scene. Fast forward to 2019. Poaching has been largely brought under control in Big Life Foundation’s Area of Operation due to the hard work of our community rangers. But some elephants still perish. Why? The elephant pictured here isn’t dead because of its ivory, but because it unknowingly crossed the line into a human space. Big Life rangers found the elephant after following lion tracks; the young adult male had been dead only hours, killed the night before. The injury was seemingly too small to have felled an animal of this size: a neat cut only inches long where a spear had entered and caused deadly internal damage. Given the location of the elephant’s body, we are almost certain that his death was caused by a spear thrown by a farmer. Another case of an understandably angry human trying to defend their property and source of income against raiding elephants. We’ve talked for a while about evolving challenges in Amboseli and how our greatest task now is to facilitate co-existence between man and animal, and ensure that there is space for all. An important step towards this is keeping elephants out of farms, and the electric crop-protection fences that Big Life is constructing are doing a remarkably good job of that. With 75km (47 miles) constructed we’ve made great progress, and each day the fence line extends further. Furthermore, we are seeing an impact, despite the tragic loss of this elephant. From a high of 12 conflict-related elephant deaths in 2016, before we started constructing the fence, last year we recorded only 2. There are a lot of factors at play here and no silver bullet, but we know that our work is saving human and elephant lives. Thanks to all those who support us. R e e f G u a r d i a n . PC 📸 @reefhunter . Classified by the IUCN as a near threatened species, Tiger sharks are one of the ocean's largest predators. As such, these animals play a key role in keeping the ecosystem in balance. A reduction in shark populations can lead to a detrimental trophic cascade - impairing reproductive rates of prey species, altering prey species behavior, and even reducing nutrient deposition in reef ecosystems. Whether you love them or fear them (or in my case, kind of both lol), these animals are a very necessary component of the world's oceans and they need protection if they're going to keep doing their jobs as guardians of the reef. . Disclaimer** When interacting with sharks (or any animal) always exercise empathy and respect. Understand their behavior before you get in the water, and seek out as much knowledge as you can from experienced shark divers and researchers in advance. These aren't puppy dogs, nor should they be anthropomorphised. In this pic you can see I am lightly touching her belly, but it should go without saying that you should never grab at, poke, ride, or harass a shark - ever 🤙 ⊹ • ⊹ • ⊹ • ⊹ #tigershark #worthmorealive #protectwhatyoulove #underwaterphotography #bahamas #onebreath
Hammerheads have always been my favorite species of shark. Besides just looking super cool with their unique heads, their hammer-shape carry some awesome super power features. So, what is the point of the 'hammer' in the hammerhead shark? Originally, scientists speculated that having eyes so far apart would result in poor vision. However, research shows that exactly the opposite is true. The wider the sharks head, the greater the extent of its binocular vision. This feature allows them to track fast-moving prey like squid with far more accuracy than sharks with close-set eyes. They also have the ability (like some other sharks) to simultaneously see prey above and below them. Cool right? There's more... also like other sharks, they have electrosensory pores across their head which helps them sense electromagnetic fields. However, these electrosensory pores are more highly concentrated on the hammer's head than they are for pointy-nosed sharks. This means that hammer-shaped heads could work a little like a personal metal detector. What's the point of that? Scalloped hammerheads are able to follow geological fault lines along the ocean floor. Recently cooled magma forms rocks that have a strong magnetic signal, which the animals follow to the locations where they form congregations to feed, school and mate, making them a highly migratory species. Unfortunately though, being highly migratory and forming large schools makes them extremely vulnerable to fishing and as a result, populations have dramatically declined and they have earned the title of 'endangered' on the IUCN Red List. #themoreyouknow #hammersarecool . . . . . . . . . . . #mexico #bajacalifornia #socorro #revillagigedo #dive #hammerhead #shark #scuba #scubadiving #marinebiology #protectwhatyoulove #divingpassport #ocean #travel #explore #wild #wildlife #nature #underwater #ourplanetdaily #worthmorealive #padi #discoverocean #photooftheday #underwateremotions #divemag #nobluenogreen #bwscubadeals
So as promised here is a very short clip, taken in 2016, of the majestic Tim in musth. As you can see he is dribbling urine and secreting from his temporal glands. 🐘 Once males reach a certain age they start to go into alternating periods of sexual activity and inactivity - each male is on his own cycle that is influenced by what other males are doing. Males in musth have very high levels of testosterone - the outward signs of musth are likely triggered by the fluctuating testosterone levels. Tim is under the watchful eye of @biglifeafrica and often seen and followed by @amboseli_trust 🐘 • Want to learn more about elephant behavior? Despite my usually sunny demeanor, ~😁~, I am often frustrated. Did you know the earth gets much of it’s oxygen from our rainforests that are being destroyed by the palm oil industry? When’s the last time you read a food label for palm oil? Did you know that EVEN MORE of our oxygen (50 to 85%) comes from phytoplankton in the ocean? The very plankton that is now getting choked out by ocean micro-plastic. Where does the micro-plastic come from? Much of it from washing our fleece and other synthetic clothing. Bummer! And we thought single-use plastic was a problem. Female African bush elephant using her ears to shade her young calf, in the Savannah ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I saw this female African bush elephant and her young calf travelling across Amboseli National Park in Kenya. They were trotting to catch up with the rest of their family group, that were ahead of them on the Savannah. The mother’s outstretched tail suggests that she is enjoying their run, but what caught my eye was how the calf appears to be using his trunk to ‘hold on’ to his mother and how she is shading her baby from the extreme temperature of the African sun, using her ears as giant parasols. See how the shadow from her ears is falling across the young elephant’s face and how the baby appears to be smiling! An African elephant's ears can grow to be six feet long and up to four feet wide. The skin on their ears is thin and the blood vessels are close to the surface, so heat can easily be released from their ears. Elephants often flap their ears to create an air flow that helps to speed up the cooling process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #babyelephant #babyelephants #elephantbaby #minielephant #motherelephant #elephantfamily #éléphant #elephanta #elephantparade #elephantart #bekindtoelephants #iloveelephants #elephantlove #elephantsafari #onsafari #safarilife #africanwildlife #wildlife_perfection #wildlifelovers #savannah #inthewild #igswildlife #instanature #naturelovers #nature_perfection #protectwildlife #worthmorealive #savetheelephants #amboseli #eastafrica
Feeding time at the elephant orphanage ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This little elephant is an orphan. Along with many other orphaned infant elephants, he has been rescued by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, where I was lucky enough to encounter him. His mother and family were most likely killed by poachers for their ivory, leaving him alone, traumatised and grieving. Baby elephants are fully dependent on their mother's milk for the first two years of life and continue weaning until the age of four, so DSWT have developed a special milk formula to feed the orphans every three hours and their keepers stay with them twenty-four hours a day, even sleeping with the elephants during the night. DSWT takes in orphan elephants from all over Kenya and raises them until they can be released into the herds of Tsavo National Park and reintegrated back into the wild. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You can find out more about the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust @DSWT ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dswt #dswtnursery #orphanelephants #babyelephant #elephant #elephants #africanelephant #africanelephants #elephantsafari #wildlife #africanwildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #conserve #conservationphotography #stoppoaching #endangeredspecies #protectwildlife #savewildlife #jointheherd #worthmorealive #savetheelephants #bekindtoelephants #wildlifephotography #wildlifephoto #nature #nairobi #nairobinationalpark #kenya #eastafrica
March of the gentle giants ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Elephants are the world’s largest and most majestic land mammals. Their name comes from the Greek word ‘elephas’ which means ‘ivory’, but due to illegal ivory poaching there are only two main species of elephant left on the planet: The African Elephant and the Asian Elephant. The Asian Elephant is now an endangered species and the African Elephant is considered vulnerable. Without urgent action to save them, elephants could disappear from the wild within a single generation. We must act to save them now, before it is too late. To do this we have to start with education and knowledge. Without that, the children of the future will only remember elephants as the dinosaurs of the 21st century. #savetheelephants ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #elephant #elephants #africanelephant #africanelephants #asianelephant #wildelephants #elephantfamily #elephantsofinstagram #instaelephant #elephantsafari #safari #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography #africanwildlife #wildlifeconservation #conserve #conservationphotography #stoppoaching #endangeredspecies #worthmorealive #protectwildlife #savewildlife #savannah #amboselinationalpark #amboseli #riftvalley #kenya #eastafrica @savetheelephants
